New to content creation? Start here

By the My Collabs team · 31 October 2026

Starting out as a creator can feel like there are a hundred things to learn at once. You don't need to learn them all today. This roadmap puts them in order, from your first posts to your first paid brand deal, and links to a detailed guide for each step when you're ready.

Stage 1: Build the foundation

1. Pick a focus

Choose one or two topics you can talk about for a long time: food in your city, budget travel, tech, fitness, finance, fashion, parenting. A clear focus helps people decide to follow you, and later helps brands decide to work with you. You can widen it later.

2. Start on one main platform

Pick the platform where your kind of content lives. Short, visual content suits Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts; longer explainers and reviews suit YouTube. Do one platform well before spreading out.

3. Learn the basics with what you have

4. Be consistent

A posting schedule you can keep (for example two or three posts a week) beats bursts of daily posting followed by weeks of silence. Look at your insights every few weeks and do more of what works.

Stage 2: Look professional

5. Set up your profile

6. Know the disclosure rules

In India, paid or gifted posts must be clearly labelled as advertising, with a label such as "#ad" or the platform's paid partnership tag, placed where people will see it. Make this a habit from your very first collaboration.

7. Make a media kit

Once you have some consistent results, put your best numbers and content in one short document. See how to make a media kit.

Stage 3: Your first brand deals

8. Handle the first message well

Check the offer is genuine, move to email, and ask the right questions. Our guide on replying to a brand's first message has templates, and warning signs of fake offers.

9. Decide on barter vs paid

Free products are common early on. Some are worth it; many aren't. Read barter vs paid collaborations before you say yes.

10. Price your work

Work out a rate you can explain: your time, your reach, and any extras like usage rights. Start with how to price a brand collaboration and the rate card template.

11. Don't wait: pitch

You can approach brands you love yourself. See how to pitch a brand.

Stage 4: Agree terms and get paid

  1. Negotiate without discounting: how to negotiate a brand deal
  2. Put it in writing: the collaboration checklist and simple contract template
  3. Understand usage and exclusivity: usage rights and exclusivity clauses
  4. Agree when you'll be paid: payment terms explained
  5. Send a proper invoice: what to put on an invoice
  6. Chase late payments politely: late payment guide
  7. Keep track every month: tracking your creator income
